Understanding The Walking Dead TV Series
The new show The Walking Dead is not what you think…
Yes the show is about an epidemic of apocalyptic proportions, which has swept the globe. Yes it has the dead rising up and feeding of the dead… like zombies but in this case known as ‘Walkers’. But the show isn’t about how the dead eat the living and just how bloody scary that would be but about how bloody scary humans become when they fighting for survival. In a world ruled by the dead, people are forced to finally begin living.
(This show is based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman.)
The show follows Rick Grimes, who finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying world. He was a small town cop who had only ever seen one dead body and was always going by the book doing what is right. It starts off with him separated from his family and him sorting through the death and horror to try and find his wife and son. He soon finds them with a group of fellow survivors and together they take on the horrors of the future they are forced to deal with.
However the plot is focused primarily on the dilemmas the group faces as they struggle to maintain their humanity during the day-to-day challenges of surviving in a hostile world including battling the zombie hordes, coping with casualties and dealing with other predatory human survivors who are dangerous in their own right.
The title of the series refers to the survivors, and not the zombies. The reason for this being, in my opinion, that they are basically going on until they die as they are infected by the virus regardless (spoiler alert) and whether they are bitten or not when they die they will come back as a ‘walker’ unless its trauma to the brain. The fight for survival isn’t just with the ‘walker’ race but also with the living as each group or cult is out for their own and willing to kill each other to survive instead of sticking as a force against the dead and trying to win out the apocalyptic battle.
This show is one of my all time favourites and if one takes it a bit deeper than that of the ‘killing the undead’, if that’s not your sort of thing, you could actually learn from it and see it with much greater depth. It’s a show not to be missed and a future all time classic in the horror division.
